Home Decor - Learn how to create Macrame wall hanging 1

Macrame is an ancient textile art that uses cord/yarn to create knots for making different designs or patterns. In the new age, this art is used to make a wall hanging, plant-hangers, keychains, table runners, coasters, etc.

Want to make your own macrame wall hanging? It is just a cakewalk. Learning macrame looks complicated but it is so simple. This DIY can be made with the help of a wooden stick and learning only basic knots.

In this project I have used the following knots:

  • Lark’s head knot =>A simple knot used to attach your work to a dowel or wooden stick
  • Square knot => A knot that you alternate by starting on the left and right side so it creates a square
  • Alternate Square knots
  • Capuchin knots => A knot that is often tied at the end to add weight to the rope and make it neat.

Supplies for making Macrame Wall Hanging

  1. Stick or dowel (I got mine from the park, you can get it from anywhere out)
  2. Macrame cording (Comes in all different sizes and colors)[Amazon.com or Amazon.in]
  3. Scissor
  4. Hairbrush
  5. Stand to work on (Optional)
  6. Tape (optional)
  7. Sandpaper(optional)

Let’s start making simple Macrame wall hanging just following few knots.

Step 1: The first thing you need to get a stick of wood or dowel and rub it with the help of sandpaper. Make it smooth, clean it with a wet cloth, and let it dry. Hang the dowel on the stand with tape.

Step 2:Measurements: 125 cm 32 cords(20 white and 12 orange), Lark’s head knot.

Lark's head knot

Cut 32 macrame cords as per measurement and loop them to a wooden stick using the lark’s head knot.I am pretty sure that you have used this knot many times.

Step 3: Next, we have to form Square knots. Take 4 strings, starting with the right side – bring the right string in front of 2 middle strings and entering the left string from the back of the 2 middle strings to form a knot.

Repeat the same knot starting with the left side to form a square knot. (As shown in video)

Step 4: Dropping right 2 string, using the Adjacent 4 strings form the alternate square knots(As shown in the above video)

Continue to do square knots by dropping outside two strings to get to the middle point from both sides.

Step 5: DIY Macrame feathers

How to make Macrame Feathers

If you are new to macrame then macrame feathers DIY is a great project to start with.

How to make Macrame Feathers

Measurements: 14cm white and orange cords ( As per requirement and color preferences)

  1. Take the first cord, fold it in half and place it under the main string with the end on the right side( as shown in the video)
  2. Take another string, fold it in half, and place it above the main string inserting the ends(left-sided) from the first string.
  3. Pull the first string ends from the 2nd string forming a knot.
  4. Repeat the above steps, the first string under the main string and the second above the main string for one layer and vise versa for another layer. Thus making a feather pattern.
  5. After completing the features as per user preference of color of cords, brush them with the help of a hairbrush( As shown in the video)(Pic. 5)
  6. Shape brushed features with scissors.

Step 6: Capuchin knot

In order to add weight to the rope and neat finish the wall piece, add capuchin knots to cords that do not have feathers as shown.

It can be done by making about 3-4 loops with the end of the cord and then pull the end to make the knot tight. Thus making a neat and perfect finish to the wall hanging.
