Samsung galaxy Z flip is an android based foldable phone launched on 14 February 2020.

It is vertical foldable and uses a hybrid glass coating branded as “Infinity Flex Display”.

 

The Z flip is preinstalled with Android 10 and Samsung’s One UI 2 skin.

Have Split-screen functionality called “Flex mode” with screen Display – 6.7 inches.
 
Features( Tricks and Tips)

1. Mini laptop with Split-screen functionality

  • Z Flip has a Multitasking feature with adjustable split-screen capabilities so you can choose what you want to focus on and do the other things simultaneously.
  • It split the screen in half and even the multiple applications on the phone will run smoothly at the same time.
  • You can multitask in either landscape or portrait mode, furnishing a more real estate.
  • One window is the main focus and the other as a side – but both windows will be active.
  • When you are using the keyboard, the app that is in focus does not get cut off.
  • In addition to the two windows(one is the focus and the other as a side), another app can be opened in the pop-up view(refer feature 2. ). All three windows can function actively.
  1. Swipe up on the home screen to go into the recent apps view, or tap the recent apps button from the navigation bar.
  2. Choose the app you want to appear on top and press and hold the app icon=> menu will appear. Tap ‘Open in split-screen view’.
  3. Next, choose the second app you want to appear on the bottom.
  4. Once you are in split-screen mode, you can press and hold on the divider bar to resize how much space each app takes up.
  5. By dragging ‘Multi-window tray’ and selecting the app from it, you can change the app on the bottom part.

2. Apps can be opened in Pop-Up View

Steps to open apps in Popup view:

  • Opening from Multiple window tray:
  1. Drag Multi-window tray, long press one of the application inside the multiple window drawer and drag it to the center, it will get open in a pop-up view which can be resizable and it is really useful for something like a calculator.
  2. You can minimize into a little bubble and kind of move anywhere on the screen and when you want to use it again, just tap on it.
 
 
  • Opening from Recently Used apps:
  1. Swipe up on the home screen to go into the recent apps view, or tap the recent apps button from the navigation bar.
  2. Choose the app you want to open in a pop-up view and press and hold the app icon=> menu will appear. Tap ‘Open in Pop-up view’.
  • Using Smart Pop-up view:

The Smart Pop-Up View feature is designed to allow selected applications to notify you when a new notification pop-up. Once you have enabled your selected apps and a notification comes through, the application will then be viewed as a little bubble. 

  1. Head into Settings > Advanced Feature.
  2. Select a Smart pop-up view.
  3. Select which apps you would like to use in the Smart pop-up view(This setting is only available for applications that support Multi-window).
  4. When a new notification pops up, you will be able to view apps as a little bubble on your home screen.
  5. If you select it, you will be able to view any new messages and respond accordingly.
  6. If you would like to adjust the transparency of the pop-up window tap on  and adjust accordingly.
  7. If you want to minimize the window back to a little bubble tap on  and to maximize the window to view in full-screen tap on .

3. Focus mode

  • Focus mode allows users to block out distracting apps while trying to keep your life in focus. It is a new setting available for Galaxy devices operating on Android OS Version 10 (Q).
  • Users can customize “Work time” or “Me time” mode by adding applications that he wants to focus on and temporarily disabling other distracting applications from notifying and stopping you from “accidentally” opening them.
  • It clears away any open notifications and stops any further notifications from showing up.
  • Not to worry about losing your notifications as previous notifications will be restored once the mode is turned OFF, in addition to any notifications that have arrived while the focus mode is ON.

Steps to use Focus mode:

  • Enabling FOCUS mode from Quick setting:
  1. Swipe down your screen to access your Quick Settings.
  2. Select a Focus Mode option then tap on Start.
  • Enabling Focus mode from Customizing Settings:
  1. Head into your Settings > Digital Wellbeing and parental controls.
  2. Tap your preferred Focus Mode or create your own by selecting Add.
  3. Tap Add to add certain apps that you want to use while Focus Mode is enabled ( Apps such as a clock, google play store, messages, phone, and settings – important apps are always allowed) or select Start to start using that Focus Mode.
  4. Tap on the apps you would like to be able to use while Focus Mode is enabled then select Done to apply the changes.
  5. You will be able to view all apps that can be accessed while that particular Focus Mode is enabled, if you’re happy with your choice select Start to enable Focus Mode.
  6. If you would like to disable Focus Mode you can easily turn off this setting via your Quick Settings or by tapping End focus mode.
 
 

When Focus Mode is ON:

  • Only the Apps which are included in the focus mode will be shown while other apps will be greyed out and blocked.
  • If you try to open applications which are greyed out, a Pop message will be displayed to the user stating that to Stay Focus and user can not use it unless focus mode is turned OFF
  • Focus mode details screen: Display => Start time, Duration of mode, available apps, and the option to End focus mode.

When FOCUS Mode is turned OFF:

  • FOCUS mode summary screen=> Duration of Focus mode, start and end time, and notification received.

This Summary will be removed at the end of the day or when Focus mode is used again.

4. Live Caption

  • Enabling the Live Caption setting detects speech and it automatically generates captions of media playing( videos, podcasts, and audio messages) and also stuff that is recorded on Z flip. This feature uses an additional battery while displaying captions.
  • Currently available in English language only.
  • Songs are not fully supported.
  • It does not use mobile data or an internet connection. All Audio and captions are processed on the device and are never stored or sent to Google.

Steps to use Live caption mode:

  • Enabling live caption mode from Quick setting:
  1. Swipe down your screen to access your Quick Settings
  2. Select a live caption option
  3. Once you have enabled live caption you will notice that caption will start displaying for media playing.
  • Enabling Live caption mode form Customizing Settings:
  1. Head into your Settings > Accessibility
  2. Tap on Hearing enhancements
  3. Select Live Caption
  4. Toggle on Live Caption to enable setting
  5. User can also view or change the below setting:

i) Hide profanity: If toggle ON, profanity will be replaced with the asterisk symbol *

ii) Show Sound labels: If toggle On, includes sounds like laughter, applause, and music.

iii) Hide or show the live caption icon in volume control.

Tips for using Live Caption:

  • Move the caption box: Touch and hold, then drag up and down.
  • Double tab to expand and contract the caption box.
  • Dismiss Live caption: Drag the caption box of the Bottom of your screen.

5. Gestures(One-handed mode)

Temporary scale down the display size for easier control of your phone with just one hand.

Steps to set up one-handed mode:

  1. Head into your Settings > Advanced features.
  2.  Tap on One-handed mode and toggle it on.
  3. Select either Gesture (swipe up diagonally to activate) or Button (tap Home 3 times to activate).
  4. To swap sides when using One-handed mode, tap the arrow key to switch from left to right.
  5. To swap sides when using One-handed mode, tap the arrow key to switch from left to right.
  6. Tap outside the reduced display area to go back to the full screen.
 

6. Turn the Z Flip fingerprint sensor into a scroll wheel

  • This feature helps to use the phone one-handed. 
  • Because of the big screen size, reaching the top of the screen for the notifications or to access quick setting can be a pain.
  • Using this feature, the fingerprint reader on the side of the phone can turn into a scroll wheel to pull down the notification and quick settings panel down which can be easily accessible.

Steps to use the fingerprint sensor into the scroll wheel:

  1. Go to Settings > Advanced Features.
  2. Select Motions and Gestures.
  3. Turn the Finger sensor gestures slider button on.
  4. When your phone is open, move your finger from the top of the fingerprint sensor to the bottom to pull down the notifications and quick setting panel.
  5. Swipe up on the sensor to close the panels.
 

7. Take a selfie without opening the phone

Steps to take selfies without opening phone:

  1. When Z flip phone is folded, the outside of it has an extremely small 1.1-inch Cover Display.
  2. When you double click on the power button, it launches the exterior camera and you can use the mini-preview to view your selfie before capturing.
  3. You can use these tiny screens to take a full-sized selfie with the rear camera.
  4. Click on the exterior camera to zoom out.
  5. To capture the photo you can use either the volume button or raise the palm of your hand to the camera to trigger a camera timer.
  6. When the flap is opened, you will be able to continue to capture photos from a rare camera.

8. Wireless PowerShare

  • With this feature, you can charge other Samsung devices with the battery of the Galaxy Z flip.
  • It works with most Qi-compatible devices, different devices may charge at a different speed.

Steps to activate Wireless PowerShare:

  1. Swipe down your screen to access your Quick Settings.
  2. Tap Wireless PowerShare to activate it OR
  3. Click on the Wireless PowerShare text.
  4. To go to the Details page, click on Details.
  5. You can set the battery limit by clicking on the ‘Battery limit’ option where you can set battery % and the phone will stop charging when it reaches the set percentage.
  6. Turn ON Wireless PowerShare and put the phone back to back with another device.
  7. Align another device with your phone battery properly, if you are having any trouble connecting or charging is slow, remove any cover from each device.
  8. ‘Ready to Charge’ message will be shown on the exterior cover display when you close the phone and No other notifications will be shown.
  9. If another device is not connected, the Wireless PowerShare setting will be automatically turned OFF after some time and notification ‘No device connected, Wireless PowerShare turned off. Turn it on again to start charging’ will be shown.
 

9. Make and Answer Phone calls without opening the phone

  • You can quickly receive phone calls from the cover screen or ask Bixby to make a call while your phone is locked.
  • When someone is calling you, their name will be displayed on the cover screen and when you tap on, you will be shown with the option to answer or decline the call. You can swipe right to answer or swipe left to decline. Answering from the cover screen enables the speakerphone if you are not using a headset or Bluetooth audio device.
  • Bixby will help you make phone calls even without touching the phone. Just need to say “Hey Bixby. Call “name in your contact list”.

Steps to Set Bixby to make phone calls:

  1. Unfold the phone, long press on the power button, and swipe up to open the Bixby voice app.
  2. Open the app, and then go to the Bixby voice setting.
  3. Then toggle ON the “Use while phone locked” option
  4. Fold phone and try to make a call by saying “Hey Bixby. Call ‘name in your contact list’”.

10. Camera movable shutter button and switching between front-rare camera while recording video

  • At the time of capturing the pictures in galaxy Z flip, you can drag and move the shutter button anywhere on the screen to take pictures when you are holding the phone. 
  • While recording videos, you can record from the front camera and can switch to a rare camera at any time.

Steps to move the Shutter button:

  1. Open the phone camera and try to drag and move the shutter button.
  2. The shutter button can be moved anywhere on the screen because of this you can easily capture pictures even when holding the phone.
